Compatibility and Installation

ESXi, vCenter Server, and vSphere Client Version Compatibility

The VMware Product Interoperability Matrix provides details about the compatibility of current and previous versions of VMware vSphere components, including ESXi, VMware vCenter Server, the vSphere Client, and optional VMware products. In addition, check this site for information about supported management and backup agents before installing ESXi or vCenter Server.

The vSphere Web Client and the vSphere Client are packaged with the vCenter Server and modules ZIP file. You can install one or both clients from the VMware vCenter™ Installer wizard.

Installation Notes for This Release

Important: The ESXi 5.5.0 Driver Rollup 1 is designed for fresh installations of ESXi hosts. VMware does not support using the ESXi 5.5.0 Driver Rollup 1 to upgrade an existing ESXi installation.

Read the vSphere Installation and Setup documentation for step-by-step guidance on installing and configuring ESXi and vCenter Server.

After successful installation, you must perform some licensing, networking, and security configuration. For information about these configuration tasks, see the following guides in the vSphere documentation.

  • vCenter Server and Host Management Documentation for licensing
  • vSphere Networking Documentation for networking
  • vSphere Security Documentation for security and information on firewall ports

Known Issues

The following known issues apply specifically to this release of the ESXi 5.5.0 Driver Rollup 1. For a complete list of known issues in the vSphere 5.5 release, see the vSphere 5.5 release notes at https://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-pubs.html.

  • For an ESXi server installed with ESXi 5.5.0 Driver Rollup 1, using the command #esxcli software vib install to update to a newer ESXi release or patch can result in known issues such as failing with an unresponsive purple screen.
Instead, use the command #esxcli software vib update to update to a newer ESXi release or patch.
  • If the installer in the ESXi 5.5.0 Driver Rollup 1 finds an existing ESXi installation, the installer displays an option to upgrade the existing installation
Do not select the option to upgrade an existing installation. The ESXi 5.5.0 Driver Rollup 1 is designed for fresh installations of ESXi hosts. VMware does not support using the ESXi 5.5.0 Driver Rollup 1 to upgrade an existing ESXi installation. If you use the ESXi 5.5.0 Driver Rollup 1 to perform a fresh installation on a system with an existing installation, the ESXi 5.5.0 Driver Rollup 1 installation will overwrite the existing installation. To preserve your existing installation, consider an alternate method to install the drivers.

Hello, as you probably know the only way to find out about HBA firmware and driver versions these days is by running:

/usr/lib/vmware/vmkmgmt_keyval/vmkmgmt_keyval -d to see which are the HBA devices, then

/usr/lib/vmware/vmkmgmt_keyval/vmkmgmt_keyval -l -i vmhba1/qlogic to actually retrieve the needed info for a hba. In this particular case I get this precious data below:

value:

QLogic PCI to Fibre Channel Host Adapter for QMH2562:

Esxcli network nic get –n vmnic0. Under Driver Info, we can determine the driver type, driver version, and firmware version. NOTE – General network adapter information can also be viewed from the VMware vSphere Client. The adapter and driver are found under Physical Adapters within the Configure tab. This release of the VMware ESXi 5.5.0 Driver Rollup 1 provides an installable ESXi ISO image that includes drivers for various products produced by VMware partners. VCenter Server, and vSphere Client Version Compatibility. The VMware Product Interoperability Matrix provides. USB 3.0 Ethernet Adapter (NIC) driver for ESXi 6.5 by William Lam 159 Comments I had several folks ask me about an updated USB 3.0 Ethernet Driver for ESXi 6.5, similiar to what I had created for ESXi 5.5 and 6.0. Install the NIC Driver on ESXi For the best performance, use SR-IOV with Intel 10GB network interfaces which requires the ixgbe 4.4.1 driver to support multiple queues for each interface. Obtain a list of network interfaces on the ESXi host. Lately I troubleshoot some NIC driver problems in VMware ESXi 5.x. During the troubleshooting I needed to Identify the NIC driver, software version used and the latest driver version supported by VMware. Here are the steps outlined. Identify the NIC driver and software version: Make a SSH connection to the ESXi host.

FC Firmware version 8.02.00 (90d5), Driver version 2.1.50.0

which I need to retrieve from all my ESXi and save to a file. I enjoy writing simple powercli scripts but I'm puzzled about this one. I know that esxcli commands can be scripted too but what about this? I could script something with plink

$plink = plink path

Juice

$plinkAuth=' -v -pw $Pswd'

$remoteCommand='/usr/lib/vmware/vmkmgmt_keyval/vmkmgmt_keyval -l -i vmhba1/qlogic'

ESXi 6.5 not recognizing Realtek 8111/8168 even with driver loaded, help? I have an ISO with the 8168 driver loaded (latest version 8.045). On the MiniPC the installer doesn't detect the NIC. On the MiniITX board it detects just fine. So I used the MiniITX system to install to USB, just to move forward.

$command='Echo Yes| '+$plink+' '+$plinkAuth+' '+$User+'@'+$hostName+' '+$remoteCommand

Update Nic Drivers Esxi Host

but as the command above throws quite some stuff I don´t know how to grab only the data output I need and save it. Obviously this is to compare with vmware compatibility matrix later. Anyone did this? I already checked Re: Host Hardware info with HBA and nic driver information but the following values are returned blank, and not sure those match the ones above that I need. I already added the -V2 switch to the script of that post.
